It's difficult to answer this because the reasons could be numerous. Technical Support are the best people to troubleshoot this sort of thing and they are free to phone or use their online chat, linked under Useful Links at the top of the page.
Off the top of my head there might be 3 obvious cases, 1) infection, which I am sure you've checked for but see the last link in my signature below for hints and tools if needed, 2) transferance of large zipped files (or large numbers thereof) can cause this because each one has to be unpacked in order to be scanned, and 3) if you are in the habit of storing large numbers of emails in your Inbox, try emptying it into user-created sub-folders, this often can help greatly.
